Memo to designers

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

You may think that putting dancers in black costumes on a black stage with minimal lighting is very dramatic, but for photographers it is a nightmare.

Panoramas and dolls

Friday, December 18th, 2009

I spent some time yesterday afternoon in the cathedral with my camera. Here are a couple of the resulting images.

I also uploaded this year’s Nutcracker pictures to the gallery.

You can see the rest of the picture here and here.

Balletic debauchery

Saturday, October 10th, 2009

I shot over 1500 frames this week during the rehearsals of the Friends University fall ballet concert, and it’s going to take me a while to go through them all. Until then, here’s a selection from Prodigal Son, choreography by Stan Rogers after Balanchine.

The macho swan

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

The spring dance concert this past weekend at Friends University featured mostly modern ballets, such as an excerpt from Matthew Bourne’s version of Swan Lake, above. The other works were also quite interesting. If they had been any more interesting, I’d have to label this post “NSFW.”

I’m finally done with this year’s Nutcracker pictures. You can see a selection here and here. Now, if you all will excuse me, I’m going to pretend that I’m on vacation.

Does the RCBfA have any interest in ballet?

*****

I’ve got eight gigabytes of Nutcracker pictures to survey and edit. That’s roughly equivalent to 48 rolls of film. I might post about classical music for beginners later today or tomorrow, but otherwise don’t expect much activity here for a while.

A few more dance pictures

Sunday, December 7th, 2008

I thought I’d post a few more pictures from the fall dance concert at Friends University before I shift into Nutcracker mode.

Update: I finally got the photo gallery working again after several days of inexplicable error messages. There are a lot more pictures here and here.

More gallery additions

Sunday, October 19th, 2008

Dark costumes and dramatic lighting can be impressive, but they make photography a challenge.

I’ve got the first batch of pictures from this fall’s dance concert at Friends University up. You can see them here and here.

Amazing dance

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

Some more pictures from the May dance concert. These are of an interpretation of a rather funky arrangement of “Amazing Grace.”

A little ballet

Saturday, July 12th, 2008

It looks like I need to find some different software for my photo gallery. The package I’m using now, “Gallery,” is insisting that I upgrade, but the upgrade won’t install and I haven’t figured a way around it. In the meantime, here are some photos that I would have uploaded there. These are from the dress rehearsal for Rogers Ballet spring concert last May at Friends University in Wichita.

Ballet in the Park

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

The other ballet company in Wichita performed their version of “Peter Pan” yesterday outdoors as the temperature approached 90°F. More pictures here.

NASA Image of the Day
A Chameleon Sky

The sands of time are running out for the central star of this the Hourglass Nebula. With its nuclear fuel exhausted, this brief, spectacular, closing phase of a sun-like star's life occurs as its outer layers are ejected and its core becomes a cooling, fading white dwarf. In 1995, astronomers used the Hubble Space Telescope to make a series of images of planetary nebulae, including the one above. Here, delicate rings of colorful glowing gas (nitrogen-red, hydrogen-green, and oxygen-blue) outline the tenuous walls of the 'hourglass.' The unprecedented sharpness of Hubble's images revealed surprising details of the nebula ejection process and may resolve the outstanding mystery of the variety of complex shapes and symmetries of planetary nebulae.
