(Start with the page on Wikipedia.) I do urge you to get the audiobook version of "A Scanner Darkly", read brilliantly by Paul Giamatti. Giamatti's acting skill brings each character (stoner, valley girl, officious nerd) exposing the hilarity of the book (among the tragedy) to even the most inattentive reader (that's me, sometimes). I really think this audiobook is the perfect form of "A Scanner Darkly," clearly better than the book on its own. Thanks to it, I finally "got" PKD and now understand why his fans are so rabidly enthusiastic.
