Despite being in my opinion "40 filler episodes", Aria is still a good series. That's probably because I can stand filler episodes if they provide character development. If both the characters and the plot are not progressing, it doesn't normally hold my interest.

The danger with a plot heavy series suitable for marathoning that's only out as a fansub is that I tend to lose interest when I'm stuck with one episode every two weeks, or I'll hold off until I have enough to marathon and then forget about it by the time I have enough. DVD box sets, on the other hand, work both ways... I ended up with a Shingu marathon because the plot kept me wanting just a bit more with each episode.
