The Kawaii Menace

There’s a fine line between kawaii and kowai

Bleah, bleah, and a surfeit of seifuku

I’m back from my trip, but I’ve got a minor yet tedious project ahead and it’s still going to be a while before I have time for anime. Don’t expect much activity here for the next two weeks.

Yesterday evening I was frazzled from travel and a long day getting caught up at work. I was in the mood for something pretentious and angsty, so I watched the first few episodes of Evangelion. It’s a bad sign when the least unsympathetic character1 is the flakiest, and worse when the putative hero is a basket case. So, does it get better, or should I abandon it now?

Update: Rei isn’t “emotionless.” She’s dead. The hell with it.

It won’t cure angst, but you can dance to it:

It gets better, and then it gets worse again. Far, far worse.

It gets much, much, much worse! Run away, run away now, before it’s too late!

The point at which the protagonist seems to be getting his act together is the point at which it takes a dive into “OMGWTF?” and never recovers.

I’m glad I saw it, just so I know what all the hoopla is about, but that is the ONLY reason to watch it.

If I hadn’t clicked on the Haruhi dance link when you posted it, I wouldn’t have understood this:

Bad copy here, but a better version was featured on Countdown’s “Oddball” segment tonight (9/19). They’ve shown the dancing Filipino prisoners before.
