A “decent” fantasy
Alex saw Tales from Earthsea and has a surprisingly positive take on it. (I don’t think he’s read the books yet.)

Positive only by comparison to what was expected, I think. Mostly he says it’s not absolutely dreadful, and even then he qualifies that by noting he hasn’t read the books and probably will hate the film afterward. He also catalogs the many various areas which it falls short. The surprise seems to be that it wasn’t an unadulturated mess, particularly visually. I liked this line: “It’s difficult to mess up the Ghibli aesthetic and the young Miyazaki has failed entirely to do so.” Sounds like Howl’s Moving Castle, which was also “pretty” but otherwise had hash for plot, even if you hadn’t read the book.
